Illini Men—Wheelchair Basketball Champs
On March 15, University of Illinois men's wheelchair basketball team defeated number 2 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, winning the national championship. The final score of 63–58 followed an intense competition focusing on Illini defense against the team who had won the national championship four times in the last five years. Watch the webcast of the game. Students on the team are part of the University of Illinois Adapted Varsity Athletics Program through Disability Resources and Educational Services.
Illini Women Win Wheelchair Basketball Championship
The Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services sponsored the 34th Annual National Women's Wheelchair Basketball Tournament from February 28–March 1, 2008 in Huff Hall. On Saturday, March 1 the Illini women captured the national title again—for a third national title and their sixth in seven years. But the win was hardly routine. The University of Alabama tied the score with seven minutes left in the game. Illinois reclaimed the lead by one and watched in relief as Alabama missed a last shot at six seconds, sealing the Illlini victory. See the Daily Illini for photos and more about the game.

New Degree: Master of Public Health
National and state demographic trends predict increases in the number of older individuals and persons with disabilities for the foreseeable future. One of the consequences of these demographic shifts is a substantial increase in the need for public health services and for the advancement of the knowledge base underlying the delivery of those services. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, public health professions will experience substantial growth between now and 2014, with a growth rate of 18–26% during that time period.
To meet that need, the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health will begin offering a Master of Public Health degree program in fall 2009 that will emphasize issues related to rural public health and prevention and public policy research and will build on existing strengths in the areas of:
Master of Public Health degree areas list
